The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a vigorous, medium-sized happy dog known for its dashing good looks and versatility in the field. They are great companions and are among Britain's oldest sporting breeds, developed as a gundog to flush, or spring, the game in the field.

They grow between 43 to 48 centimetres and weigh between 15 to 25 kilograms. This breed is more prominent and stronger than Cocker Spaniels but smaller than English Springers.

Welsh Springer Spaniels have a medium-length, waterproof coat that moderately sheds throughout most of the year, except during heavier shedding periods such as spring and autumn. Grooming them is relatively low maintenance but they are prone to developing mats and tangles if they are not brushed regularly. A good brushover will help to maintain their coat.

Grooming a Welsh Springer Spaniels is relatively easy. Make sure to clean their ears regularly because the floppy ears of Welsh springers and most spaniels are prone to ear infections.

This breed does not need a lot of grooming, but the feathering will need regular combing, brushing with a stiff bristle brush and trimming at least once a week. Their nails should be trimmed at least once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems.

This type of dog was bred to hunt, so it needs a lot of physical exercise. Welsh springer spaniels tend to wander, so off-leash exercising should be done within a confined area. They love swimming, but with supervision to ensure their safety when in water. They are ideal candidates for field trials.

A regular exercise routine of up to 2 hours a day is needed to keep them healthy and content. Without adequate exercise, a Welsh Springer Spaniel may become hyperactive and can develop destructive behaviours.

Welsh Springer Spaniels have some known health conditions. Issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, autoimmune thyroiditis, and eye diseases such as entropion (turning inward of the eyelid), glaucoma and hereditary cataracts are some that you need to keep an eye on. Welsh Springer Spaniels can also be prone to obesity tendency so keep an eye on their diet. Regular vet visits of at least once every six months is important, to help address any health issues early on.

Welsh springer spaniels are known for their loyalty and devotion to their families. They are high-spirited, good-natured companions and are an excellent choice for a family pet.

Proper training can help bring out a Welsh springer spaniel's abilities, including hunting, retrieving and tracking. Welsh Springers are brilliant dogs who are easy to train, making superb obedience dogs and working gundogs. They love to please their owners and generally have a kind and happy temperament. Use positive reinforcement and praises when training them. You may use treats to help with training. Socializing them at a young age helps with their attitude in meeting people and other animals they don't know.

If they've been raised with other pets from puppyhood, Welsh Springers are generally good with other pets in the household, even the smaller ones. However, because of their natural hunting instincts, they might see birds as prey and run after them.
