How to get a Pre-approval for Your pet’s treatment

We know it can be stressful to find out your pet needs an expensive treatment.

A Pre-approval helps ease some of that stress by letting you know in advance if the treatment is covered before you commit to the costs.

What you need to do

To request a Pre-approval, here’s what we’ll need:

  • An itemised estimate from your vet – This should list the expected costs for the procedure.
  • A description of the procedure – Your vet should outline the treatment plan and why it’s needed.
  • Your pet’s full medical history – This includes vet records related to the condition (brief emails or notes from your vet won’t be enough.)

What needs to be in place for a Pre-approval?

Before we can process a Pre-approval, the following requirements
must be met:

  • A completed Pre-Existing Condition Assessment - We would have sent emails about this when you first joined. If this hasn’t been done, we won’t be able to proceed.
  • The estimate and history must be received before 2pm AEST, Monday to Friday for assessment to be provided within 1 business day. This ensures we have enough time to review your request.
  • The Exclusion Periods on your policy must have ended for the condition being treated and be served symptom-free.

Important Things to Know

  • If your pet is already in hospital, a Pre-approval may not be possible because treatment plans and costs can change quickly.
  • If your pet’s life is at risk, such as in cases where euthanasia is being considered, we will escalate the assessment and do our best to provide an outcome as soon as possible. We understand the urgency and financial impacts of the decision. It’s important that in the absence or awaiting a decision, that you follow Your Vet’s advice for treatment as this may impact your claim assessment.

Whilst we will always do our very best to help, a Pre-approval may not be available in some instances due to the complexity of Veterinary Care.

Pre-approvals are best for planned, high-cost treatments.

Specified Conditions includes:

  • Cruciate ligament damage
  • Intervertebral disc disease
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Patella luxation
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Cherry eye
  • Entropion
  • Ectropion,
  • Osteochondritis dissecans (‘OCD’)
  • Lumps

Lumps means the protuberance or localised area of swelling or unusual growth that can occur anywhere on or in the body including tumours, warts, cysts, growths, mucoceles, haematomas and abscesses.

You can apply to reduce the 6-month exclusion period for Specified Conditions by using our request for Waiver Form. Simply take this form to your next vet visit and submit the completed form back to [email protected] within 14 days of the visit.

Optional Extra Benefits

During the application process You will be provided with the option to include Optional Extra Benefits that cover certain conditions and Treatments which are not otherwise covered under the Policy.

The Optional Extra Benefits are:

Alternative Therapies, Behavioural Problems, and Dental Illness.

Examples of Alternative Therapies: Acupuncture, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy.

Examples of Behavioural Problems: Excessive licking, fur pulling, pacing and destructive chewing.

Examples of Dental Illnesses: Dental diseases, gingivitis, periodontal disease.
