All about the
Spanish Water Dog.

The SWD's sources remain unclear. According to some dog experts, they came from African dogs or Other European water dogs, such as the Portuguese Water Dog, Turkish and Hungarian herding and flock-guarding breeds. The single curly coat of the breed is thought to be an adaptation to the Iberian Peninsula's varied climates, which vary from dry to humid. Today, European and American registries recognise the SWD. The SWD is classified as a herding dog by the American Kennel Club, which gave it complete approval in January 2015, allowing it to compete in conformation shows and other AKC competitions.

SWD is a medium-sized breed of dogs, where males stand at 44-50cm and weigh proximately 18 - 22kg, while the females stand at 40-46cm and weigh just proximately 14-18kg. And a life expectancy of 12-14 years. SWD is a breed of well-defined proportions, including a marginally more significant back than the dog's height and a chest cut in half at the withers. It has a rectangular shape: its dense, corded coat. The broad nose should be the same colour as the Head, if not darker, and the tight lips should have pronounced labial corners. The triangular ears are situated at a medium height and lie flat to the side of the skull, while the medium-sized eyes are hazel or brown and set obliquely. The coat is unique in that it is very curly and forms cords when left to rise. In either of the above combinations, it is either solid or bi-coloured: (e.g. White, Black, Chestnut, Black, White, and White Brown)

Spanish Water Dog is a very active and playful but work-oriented dog breed. This dog breed was developed to herd and protect livestock such as goats, sheep, and cattle. They are brilliant dogs with an incredible amount of stamina, which is why these dogs are so good at sporting events. This breed of dog was a hardworking aide on Spanish plantations, mines, and fishing villages, where they are tasked with several other tasks like retrieving, rat patrol, and security.

Frequently asked questions about the Spanish Water Dog.

SWD will shed a negligible amount. They are recommended for owners who do not want to deal with dog hair in their cars and homes. It should never be trimmed but sheared down at least once a year.

Grooming isn't necessary for SWDs. SWDs should never be brushed; instead, they should be tested for matting as the cords expand. They should be carefully taken apart without breaking the cords if matting occurs. The cords should be sheared if there is too much matting.

SWDs can never be bathed in lukewarm water while they are dirty. Never use human shampoo; instead, use a neutral shampoo. Allowing SWDs to air dry is recommended. Ears and eyes should be washed if needed, and excess ear hair should be plucked if necessary. Nails should be clipped on all puppies. About the age of four months, SWD puppies should be shaved for the first time.

A healthy run at least once a day is beneficial to Spanish Water Dogs. They can prolong strenuous activity until they have attained full maturity and the bone growth plates have closed. They make excellent companions for sports such as biking, climbing, or snowshoeing.

They love being busy because of their moderate size and natural athleticism, but they still have a decisive ''off turn'' for the more settled time at home. SWDs are typically good swimmers, and playing fetch in the pool is a perfect way to burn calories without the chance of damage from retrieving on the ground. They should exercise at least once every day.

Hip Dysplasia and allergies are the most common issues with SWD. The other cases, on the other hand, tend to be less common. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, Addison's disease, congenital hypothyroidism with goitre, myasthenia gravis, and epilepsy are also diseases found in the breed. A regular eye test by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist to ensure the parents are free of medical anomalies such as cherry eye, distichiasis (abnormal internal development of eyelashes), glaucoma, recurrent pupillary membranes, and gradual retinal atrophy.

SWD is an excellent friend, loyal to his owners, a cheerful and attentive dog who demonstrates strength and endurance as well as unusual agility. He is adaptable and easy to train, and he completes his duties with integrity. He is shy around strangers, but he should not be timid. Despite becoming a powerful employee, viciousness against people or animals is unacceptable. They are friendly with people and other small animals from a young age.

To keep this dog from being defensive and territorial, make sure you are the firm, trustworthy, and confident pack leader. They are an excellent pet for families who have the patience to train and interact with their Spanish Water Dog; however, this is a dog who gets bored quickly, so it is best for older children to participate in the training and activities. Although certain dogs are considered to be gentle with children, both dogs and children must be trained to get along and stay healthy together. And then, dogs and small children should never be left alone together, and adults should supervise any encounters with them.

SWDThis is a breed with a high level of intelligence and activity (both mentally and physically). They like the problem-solving aspect of constructive reinforcement using a clicker or other related training method. SWDs are exceptionally biddable and eager to please, and they are proving to be highly competent and flexible.

Harsh training methods can cause the SWD to lose interest in the assigned tasks, causing him to shut down. Potential owners should be aware that certain SWDs have a strong prey drive due to their work as herding dogs. They need a reliable recall. Even with careful preparation, certain dogs can succumb to the lure of a squirrel, rabbit, or deer. The Spanish Water Dog's attitude needs special attention. These dogs are devoted to their parents, but they can be cautious around outsiders. From a young age, continuous socialization, as well as meaningful new experiences, are essential.

SWDs can get along well with cats if they are appropriately introduced and watched, but they may pursue smaller prey outside the property, as do all dogs. They are sweet to other dogs and will socialize around various pets because they are a socially involved breed.
