A high-quality dog food, whether professionally made or home-prepared with your veterinarian's guidance and approval, should be fine for the Podengo.
Any diet should be tailored to the age of the dog (puppy, adult, or senior). The Podengo is a primitive dog who can hunt on its own if given the chance. Some dogs are vulnerable to being overweight, so keep an eye on their calorie intake and weight. Treats can be a useful teaching aid, but giving too much can lead to obesity. Discover which human diets are suitable for dogs and which are not.
If you have any questions about your dog's weight or diet, consult your veterinarian. For all times, clean, fresh water should be available.
The Portuguese Podengo dog doesn't shed much and doesn't need to be groomed. Even in the show ring, the breed standard states that this breed can only be trimmed. The Podengo dog's coat should be shown as naturally as possible, making him as similar to a ''clean and go'' dog as you can get.
The coats of Portuguese Podengo Pequenos are usually light, medium, or dark yellow or fawn. Some may be black or brown, with some marks on their fur. The sleek coat and the harsh, wiry coat are the two-coat styles for these pups. The smooth coat is short and dense, while the rough, wiry coat is thicker and longer. Since there is no undercoat, grooming is relatively easy. For these tiny pups, brushing them at least once a week suffices. Portuguese Podengo Pequenos dislike cold weather because their jackets are thinner. They prefer warm weather over cold weather.
A Podengo, as you imagine from a hunting dog, has a lot of stamina. They need a lot of exercise and a lot of room to run around in. If these aren't present, a bored Podengo can quickly resort to disruptive behaviour to pass the time. If they have keys to a backyard, make sure it is well fenced (at least 6ft high).
Podengo is often advised to be exercised on a leash in urban areas to prevent them from attacking neighbourhood animals, making owning a Podengo in the city incredibly time-consuming. They should also be allowed to participate in off-leash games like lure coursing or flyball.
Podengos, including their hunting heritage, are not ideal for being kept outside all of the time because their coat is not thick enough to withstand inclement weather.
Since there are very few of them, nothing is known about the Podengo's welfare or any genetic disorders that can affect the breed. Sporting injuries, such as hamstring or toe injuries suffered while exercising, are possible. A reliable breeder will talk to you about potential health issues, like any issues she's seen on her lines. Remember that after you've brought your new puppy around, you can shield him from one of the most popular health issues: obesity. One of the simplest ways to prolong the life of a Portuguese Podengo is to keep him at a healthy weight. Make the best of your prevention skills to help your dog live a longer, happier life.
Overly energetic children will easily injure the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno because it is a small dog. Adults and children of all ages will get along with Portuguese Podengo Pequenos. However, more minor children can learn how to better handle and play with a small dog since early as possible, as they can make excellent friends and watchdogs.
Podengo is a breed of intelligent dogs who respond well to instruction. To get the best results, they should begin their training regimen as soon as possible. Positive stimulation in the form of food and play works well for them. Because their independent disposition can be wilful, and a strong recall is vital in this breed.
Podengo needs to be socialized by both humans and pets because a poorly socialized dog struggles to respond to new situations. Food guarding is another possible behavioural issue in Podengo. This should be taken care of as soon as possible, mainly if your Podengo will be living with children.
When it comes to other dogs, the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno will get along with them if they are introduced gently and politely, and early socialization can help make this happen. They should get used to other animals as soon as possible. Many of this breed category get along with almost all, including other dogs and cats, but it all comes down to preparation, socialization, and the luck of the draw.
