Frequently asked questions about the King Charles Spaniel.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have silky, medium-length coats that shed moderately during the year. So they're not hypoallergenic nor the least shedding dog breed in the world. In the plus hand, relative to some toy dogs, their hair isn't as high maintenance.

Brushing them once a week with a rubber grooming mitt or tool or a de-shedding glove will help remove dead hair and maintain its appearance.

Grooming them does not require much work.

Clippers or a combination of clippers and stripping (a method in which the coat is thinned and shortened using a sharp, comb-like tool called a stripping knife) can be used to trim their coat. If your dog's nails don't break off naturally, trim them once or twice a month to avoid painful tears and other issues. Check their lips, ears, nose, throat, eyes, and feet for sores, rashes, or symptoms of illness such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation. Ears should have a pleasant odour and be free of wax or gunk, and eyes should be clean and free of redness or discharge.

Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you'll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when he's an adult.

Although they were developed to be a beloved lap dogs, the Cavalier is descended from sports dogs and enjoys moderate training and outdoor activities. They need at least 45 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. That could be a combination of a stroll along the park or other canine activities, especially that they love stimulating workouts!

Veterinary care is essential to maintain a dog's health and well-being, and the frequency of vet visits required will depend on the individual dog. Annual health checks are recommended to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout their different life stages.

In these annual visits, your vet will complete a physical examination, take your dog's temperature, check his heartbeat and overall health.

They are caring and calm dogs. They are an excellent choice for families of babies or children because of these characteristics. Cavaliers make excellent playmates for children who love playing balls for them, showing them tricks, playing in dog sports, or just holding them on their lap while reading or watching TV.

Although the Cavalier is known for being a playful breed, it is also known for being a very docile dog.

Cavaliers are intelligent and easy to train, and they excel in a number of canine activities such as obedience, rally, and agility. They respond well with commands and instruction but don't use harsh words because they tend to be sensitive also. Positive reinforcement works well with them as well as a rewards-based system.

Design their training routine that satisfies their needs.

Cavaliers are friendly to all and peaceful with other dogs and cats. They enjoy playing with domestic pets around your house. However, like all sweet-tempered breeds, they have the capacity to be timid around them, so they really require lots of socialization to develop a calm, outgoing disposition.
