Italian Greyhound should be fed 1/2 to 3/4 cup of high quality and high-calorie dry food a day, divided into two meals. Keep your Italian Greyhound in good shape by measuring his food rather than leaving it out all the time. The quality of dog food you buy also makes a difference - the better the dog food, the further it will go towards nourishing your day and the less of it you'll need to shake into your dog's bowl.
Italian Greyhounds have short, single coats and are considered low-shedding dogs. This is why they are also low maintenance. However, they still need regular grooming to keep them adorable. Brushing and bathing should be done occasionally or whenever needed.
Keeping them clean and neat does not take so much effort. Begin accustoming them to being brushed and examined when they are still puppy. Handle their paws frequently ? dogs are touchy about their feet ? and look inside their mouth. Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems.
Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, which can indicate an infection. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.
Italian Greyhounds are an active breed and need regular exercise. They enjoy a walk and run once or twice a day, especially that they enjoy outdoor activities.
They need a daily 40 to 60 minutes of workout. Remember that they need very little movement while they are puppies to prevent causing injury to their weak bones and joints.
Older Italian Greyhound may require more frequent vet visits as early detection is key in giving the best possible treatment of any health conditions that may arise. Routine checkups also provide the chance to track your dog's growth and development and forms a key part of preventative care.
The Italian Greyhound has a sweet disposition, affectionate and caring towards family members but quiet or shy with strangers. Children get along well with Italian Greyhounds, and it's important to show children that dogs, like humans, must be handled with affection and consideration.
The Italian Greyhounds are playful and intelligent dogs who are generally quick to train and like to spend much of their time with their trainer. They adapt more to reward-based training practices than to rough discipline, which is understandable given their sensitivity.
It is beneficial to design their training schedule with experienced dog trainers' assistance to get further advice about how to manage their energy levels.
While most Italian Greyhounds get along well with other dogs and cats, some have a strong prey drive and will chase squeaky animals into the dirt. It's best to keep an eye on them because they tend to act out around larger dogs and inadvertently harm them when playing.
Early socialization will help them teach how to behave around their playmates and even strangers.
