Frequently asked questions about the Irish Water Spaniel.

The Irish Water Spaniel is a low-shedding breed with a hypoallergenic coat, making them a better choice for those with allergies than any other breeds.

Their curly, durable double coat isn't easy to keep up with; it needs to be brushed two to three days a week to avoid mats. Their water-repellent coat's natural oil attracts mud and debris and holds it in place.

Brushing helps to disperse oil and clear dirt from the coat.

Grooming them does not require much work. Clippers or a combination of clippers and stripping (a method in which the coat is thinned and shortened using a sharp, comb-like tool called a stripping knife) can be used to trim their coat.

If your dog's nails don't break off naturally, trim them once or twice a month to avoid painful tears and other issues. Check their lips, ears, nose, throat, eyes, and feet for sores, rashes, or symptoms of illness such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation. Ears should have a pleasant odour and be free of wax or gunk, and eyes should be clean and free of redness or discharge.

Make grooming a pleasurable activity for them, complete with encouragement and treats.

The Irish Water Spaniel is a high-energy, enthusiastic friend. They are willing to please, which makes them pretty easy to train, but he needs a lot of exercise on a regular basis.

Long walks or outings, running alongside a bicycle, chasing a ball in the backyard, or playing with other dogs regularly can help him stay physically and mentally fit and comfortable, and calm inside the house.

Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being, however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog. Scheduled six-monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout all life stages.

Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog's growth and development, discuss any concerns with your vet, and form a key part of preventative care.

Irish Water Spaniels do best with children if they are raised with them. Early socialization helps them get acquainted more with other people.

They are alert and inquisitive, making them an excellent watchdog while they are usually devoted to the entire family, they may choose a particular person as their favourite. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he's eating or to try to take the dog's food away.

Irish Water Spaniels are playful, smart, and eager to please. They have lots of energy and will appreciate having a job to do. So, it won't take you so much energy to train them.

However, training sessions should be fun and interesting to be sure you keep them from being bored. Positive reinforcement works well on them and other reward-based training methods.

And remember to keep them motivated by not using harsh or heavy-handed approaches, bringing unwanted results.

Irish Water Spaniels are friendly and sociable. They can get along well with other pets in the family, especially more if introduced to them at a young age. And because they are hunting dogs, they may view smaller animals as prey. However, with proper training and socialization, they'll learn how to behave around unfamiliar pets.
