All about the
Irish Terrier.

The Irish Terrier is one of the oldest Terrier breeds, perhaps descended from the now-extinct black and tan Terrier and a larger wheaten-coloured terrier. During World War I, Irish Terriers served as messenger dogs and sentinels, earning several awards for courage and devotion. Today the Irish Terriers main duty is as a companion dog, although they still are keen ratters.

The ideal weight for a male Irish Terrier is 12 kilograms, while it is 11 kilograms for females. Both may reach the height at the shoulder from 46 to 51 centimetres. The Irish Terrier is larger in stature and has longer legs than most terriers. They have long heads with powerful jaws, dark brown eyes that sparkle with fire and wisdom, short V-shaped ears that drop down, and a docked tail. Their thick, wiry coat hugs the body and comes in brilliant red, golden red, red wheaten, and wheaten colours.

The Irish Terrier is a courageous, sensitive dog whose nature reflects their heritage as a friend, guardian, and hunter. They are a devoted family friend, watchdog, and tireless worker. When raised with youngsters, this adaptable breed is great with them, and they are very faithful to their human pack. They are equally at ease in any environment or atmosphere, whether rural or urban.

Frequently asked questions about the Irish Terrier.

Irish Terriers have short, dense, wiry coats that shed moderately. To help maintain their coat, weekly brushing should be done to help reduce the amount of hair in your home, and it keeps their plush coat healthy. Occasional baths could also help but only whenever it is really needed.

Keeping them clean and neat does not take so much effort. Begin accustoming them to being brushed and examined when they are still puppy. Handle their paws frequently ? dogs are touchy about their feet ? and look inside their mouth.

Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, which can indicate an infection.

Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

The Irish Terrier is lively, playful, and outgoing, with high energy. They are great athletes and need regular exercise, so a fenced backyard is ideal.

Owners can also exercise them by walking while on a leash several times a day to maintain mental and physical fitness. Obedience, agility, rally, earth dog, and flyball events provide an outlet for the breed?s energy, natural athleticism, and intelligence.

Irish Terriers are willful dogs and always want to please their owner. They are great as show and performance dog!

Regular visits to their vet will ensure their health and well-being. Schedule at least twice a year veterinary care or as recommended depending on your dog's state. In these visits, your vet will complete a physical examination, take your dog's temperature and check his heartbeat, among other things.

Discuss with your vet any concerns you think needs immediate attention as it is a key part of preventative care.

Irish Terrier's size and high energy level make them excellent for active kids. However, supervision is a must, especially if the children are very young and inexperienced with dogs. Teach both the dogs and children how to interact with one another.

Proper socialization is needed at an early age to teach dogs how to behave around children. In general, they make a great family companion!

The Irish Terriers are intelligent and eager to please their family. They are also known to be high-spirited and love to do things independently, which makes them sometimes challenging to train.

It is important to make their training short and creative to keep their interest. And because they learn quickly, they are not really a burden to them.

Their sweet demeanour always finds them getting well with others. Sociable dogs like them tend to get along with other dogs and cats. However, make sure that they will have an early socialization with other dogs to establish good relationship with other domestic pets.
