All about the
Icelandic Sheepdog.

The Sheepdog is thought to have descended from dogs brought over from Denmark and Sweden. During the late 19th century, a disease killed off over 75% of the Sheepdogs in Iceland, which almost made them extinct. Because of this, the importation of this dog breed was banned to ensure recovery. The solution, later on, became successful. This may be why this dog breed is considered rare up to modern times.

They are small to medium-sized, with males standing 45 cm tall at the shoulder and females marginally shorter at 40 cm. A healthy adult dog weighs between 9 and 14 kg, with males being heavier.

This type of dog breed is sometimes called ?Ice?. They are active dogs who typically enjoy most types of exercise, including swimming. They are highly people-oriented and will generally stick close to you during walks or runs. Ice can compete in agility, flyball, rally, nose work and obedience, and their talents generally don?t stop with dog sports. Some make therapy visits, do search and rescue work and perform their traditional task of herding on farms.

Frequently asked questions about the Icelandic Sheepdog.

The Icelandic Sheepdog shed a fair amount, even more so during shedding season, which occurs twice a year. Increase brushing routine to once a day when their shedding picks up in these seasons. At least once a week, brush their coat to remove dead hair and keep the skin and coat healthy.

It doesn't take so much effort to groom them. Weekly brushing?daily during shedding season?will help to remove dirt and loose hair and keep the dog looking their best. Any tangles can be worked out with a slicker brush or metal comb.

Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, indicating an infection. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

Make grooming a pleasant experience for them, complete with encouragement and treats, and you'll be paving the way for simple vet assessments and other handling when they are older.

Icelandic Sheepdogs enjoy long walks or hikes. Daily moderate exercises will help keep them healthy and happy. Owners should also exercise them in mind and body by participating in canine sports such as obedience, herding, tracking, agility, rally, and other activities that dog and owner can enjoy.

Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being, however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog. Scheduled six-monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog's growth and development, discuss any concerns with your vet, and form a key part of preventative care.

Icelandic Sheepdogs are affectionate and sociable dogs. They are ideal to be children's companions because they are playful and friendly. They are great to be family dogs and loves to be surrounded by kind people.

Icelandics are intelligent, high-energetic, and willful, making them easy to train. They work best with positive reinforcement and other rewards-based approaches. Avoid using harsh actions or training methods as they may not respond to it.

They enjoy the attention they get from their family, so they are likely to follow your command. Train them as early as possible to develop their good foundation.

Icelandic Sheepdogs are affectionate, confident, and playful dogs. They tend to get along well with everyone, including housepets, especially if raised with them. They will need early and proper socialization and introduction to other pets to teach them how to behave around new friends.
