All about the
Gordon Setter.

The Gordon Setter, also known as the ''black and fallow setting breed,'' was first recorded in 1620. Gordon Setter's origins can be traced back to the Spanish pointer and other early spaniel breeds. The breed was named after the 4th Duke of Gordon, who founded it officially in 1827 at his castle in Banffshire, Scotland. The Gordon is Scotland's only native gundog, bred specifically to hunt gamebirds, especially grouse.

Female Gordon Setters are 58.4 to 66 cm tall and weigh 20.4 to 31.7 kg, while males are 60.9 to 68.5 cm tall and weigh 24.9 to 36.2 kg. This magnificent dog's fluffy and lustrous coat is longer around the ears, back of legs, stomach, tail, and belly. This fur may be smooth or with a subtle wave to it. They'll have short tails and triangularly shaped feathering, with hair that shortens as it approaches the tail's end, making it a flag-like look.

Gordons are energetic and attentive, with a pleasant demeanour. They are devoted to their families and suspicious of outsiders, qualities that make them ideal watchdogs. Gordon will welcome recognition if you expose him to another, but he is unlikely to seek it out. A Gordon may never be timid or defensive when it comes to humans, but he may be aggressive toward other dogs. If he is raised with cats, he may learn to get along with them, but he may see outside animals as prey.

Frequently asked questions about the Gordon Setter.

Gordon Setters shed a lot and take more than just essential grooming. This breed may not be suitable for you if you don't have the time to groom them properly. Gordon Setters shed a moderate amount of fur over the year, so brushing them regularly is an easy and efficient way to avoid shedding. In terms of grooming, their hair needs a bit more attention than the normal dog's.

Brushing at least once a week is necessary to avoid matting. If the dog is washed daily, shedding is small. Trimming the hair on the feet, trimming the toes, trimming inside and around the head, trimming around the vent/tail section, and inspecting the teeth for plaque are all recommended for hygiene. Bathing at least once a month is advised. Bathing and conditioning can help avoid dry skin and dandruff.

Gordons were trained to be personal hunting dogs as well as nannies for their owners. They like cuddling next to you or at your feet, as well as racing around a track. They need exercise, and their genetic makeup dictates that they have a solid need to run.

They can live in an apartment, but they still require regular exercise to get by walking, jogging, or biking with their dog. They will self-exercise if they have a yard to run in, but a Gordon will still want to do something for their bonded owner. That is what they work for to be with their master.

To avoid bloat, never walk your dog one-half hour before or after a meal.

Significant health conditions such as gastric torsion and canine Hip Dysplasia and minor issues such as cerebellar abiotrophy, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hypothyroidism, and elbow dysplasia, are common in the Gordon Setter, which has an average lifetime of 10 to 12 years.

If the dog has a distended belly, drools heavily, and retches without throwing up, it may be bloat. He may also be agitated, depressed, sluggish, and slow, with a fast heart rate.

Get your dog to the Vet as soon as possible if you experience these signs.

Gordon Setters get along so well with children and can be defensive of their own. They make lovely, loving friends for children and their whole families in general.

It's important to note that dogs and young children can never be left alone regardless of breed. Gordons have a soft spot for children and are respectful of them.

They'll put up with a lot before walking away because they've had enough of the bullying or roughhousing. However, since they are big enough to knock down, they could be too much for toddlers.

It is recommended to learn a few basic life-saving commands. A puppy or dog must be taught to understand the order ''come'' and to answer when called; to recognize and respond to his name; and to follow the word ''no.'' Gordons are obstinate but yet kind and caring, and they live to please their owners.

They are very intelligent and adapt easily. The easiest way to teach them is to give them a job to do, and the best job they will have is to spend time with their owner, whether exercising or having fun.

They are devoted to their families and long to be with them, but they are content to be alone while they are not with them.

Gordons get along with other cats and dogs if they've been bred with them, but strange dogs might not be so friendly. Gordon Setters, you know, flourish on one-on-one treatment. They are also violent toward unfamiliar dogs and can be jealous of other pets.
