If you're somebody who hates dog fur everywhere or suffers from allergies, then Wire Fox Terriers is for you. It's just not as common as their smooth-coated counterparts. This is because their coat is more like human hair than usual dog hair or fur. And as such, it doesn't fall out at the same rate as most other dogs. Although they need clipping and trimming every few months to maintain their rough hypoallergenic coat.
Foxhounds smooth, short-haired coat is easy to groom. They can be comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and shampoo only when necessary. The short skin makes the English foxhound's grooming needs minimal; regular brushing and an occasional bath are all that is necessary.
Foxhounds require an adequate amount of exercise. This translates to mean daily walks, games of fetch in a yard where they can run, and an occasional swim are all activities that your dog will love.
For them to thrive, great exercise and activities can be a great help. They are suitable to take off after an inviting scent; that exercise should be in a secure, confined area or on a leash.
Foxhounds are a somewhat healthy breed. Hip Dysplasia and ear diseases are detected occasionally, but not often enough to be deemed a concern. But similar to all species, they're prone to specific health conditions. We also need to remember that not all Foxhounds will get any or all of these diseases, but it's essential to be aware and have a regular vet visit.
The Foxhounds are friendly with his family and other dogs. He has a character and intelligent nature that makes him a great family dog, even with young children. Many a toddler has steadied himself by hanging onto the family Foxhound. With strangers, though, some Foxhounds are wary or even downright aggressive.
Foxhounds are receptive and ready to learn. Please take the opportunity to show them what you want, and reward them with admiration or treats when you?re happy with them. Like all hounds, the Foxhound uses his nose and can be stubborn in his attempts to follow a scent, find food or otherwise get his way.
Training and socialization are essential for the English foxhound, especially if the dog is not pursuing his ancient calling of hunting. While intelligent and responsive, they are quickly distracted by interesting smells, and patience and training are vital.
Foxhound loves the company of other hounds, especially other foxhounds, and they're pretty comfortable around horses. They frequently do well with other animals, but they may chase smaller pets with their excellent prey drive. Supervise interactions with cats, smaller dogs, or other animals until you're sure everyone gets along.
