For up to 18 weeks, an English Springer Spaniel should be served four meals a day at daily intervals as a general rule. Then three meals a day at daily intervals from 18 weeks to 9 months. From 9 to 18 months, two meals a day at daily intervals are recommended.
In addition, they must consume 1.5 to 2 cups of high-quality dried food each day, split into two meals. Puppies can drink up to 4 cups of food a day.
English Springer Spaniels have a medium-length double coat that is durable and protects them from cold conditions and rocky terrain. They shed moderately.
They shed moderately all year but more vigorously in the spring and fall, and brushing with a slicker brush will help keep it to a minimum. They usually only shed in the summer and spring months but occasionally shed in the autumn.
Weekly brushing can help clear dirt and loose fur from the Springer's coat, keeping it healthy, shiny, and mat-free. A slicker brush or wire dog comb should be used to sort out some tangles.
The Springer's coat can be clipped and neatened up by the owner or taken to a skilled groomer, particularly the feet, the areas around the head and neck, and under the tail. Nails should be clipped daily in all breeds since excessively long nails can be uncomfortable to the dog and cause trouble walking and running.
Though they prefer to spend their time with their human families indoors, English Springer Spaniels love outdoor adventures and make excellent walking or hiking companions. While a home with a big, fenced yard where the dog can run or partake in play sessions with his people is possibly best, the breed can be perfect for owners living in a tiny house or apartment with proper exercise.
Exercise daily will keep your Springer safe and happy. Long walks and playtimes are examples of this. The breed also engages in mind and body training such as obedience, tracking, endurance, rally, and other games that both the dog and the trainer will enjoy.
While English Springer Spaniels are generally healthy dogs, there are a few health and genetic screening issues unique to the breed. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia, as well as eye problems, are shared among the breed's ailments. Breeders who are responsible will test their stock for diseases that the breed is vulnerable to. The ears of the Springer should be tested for signs of illness daily, and the teeth should be cleaned often with a toothpaste formulated for puppies.
If springers are raised with children from the time they are puppies, they usually get along swimmingly. Older Springers who aren't used to being around kids do better in a home with old enough kids to properly communicate with them. Often educate children how to approach and contact dogs, and supervise all contact between dogs and young children to avoid biting or ear or tail pulling on any party's side. Teach your child never to touch a feeding dog or attempt to steal the dog's food. With a puppy, no dog should ever be left unattended.
Early socialization and puppy training lessons are essential for the Springer to develop into a well-behaved, well-mannered friend. Springers are energetic and intellectual, so ongoing training and gentle instruction are crucial. Since the Springer is an aggressive and forward hunter of his world, the owner must maintain control at all times. When a Springer is left alone for extended periods, he needs to be with his mates, leading to unhealthy habits.
Springers are usually fine with other pets in the home, including small ones, but since they are trained to hunt, they can see pet birds as prey. Separate them, so they don't injure each other. The beak of a parrot is a powerful knife. English Springer Spaniels are happy to please, polite, and gregarious. They are known for being fast learners and easy to teach. They make excellent family pets and get along with both children and other dogs, but they do not get along with cats.
