Chihuahuas need a high-quality diet rather than a massive volume of food because of their small size. It''s best to feed them smaller, more regular meals (around 3-4 times a day) to stabilise their blood sugar levels. It''s also a smart idea to feed your Chihuahua kibble rather than wet or semi-moist dog food, as this helps to keep their teeth clean and maintain their dental health.
Chihuahuas shed all year long, but you will mostly find them shed more in spring and fall, with the spring being the heaviest shedding. So you'll want to increase your brushing routine to once a day when their shedding picks up in these seasons. Brush him at least once a week to remove dead hair and keep the skin and coat healthy.
The Chihuahua is a wash-and-go dog. Grooming them is relatively manageable. Using a rubber grooming mitt or a brush with short, natural bristles, brush him once a week. A flea comb with fine teeth can help clear loose or dead fur.
Their coat may be either trimmed with clippers or by stripping (a process by which the coat is thinned and shortened with a sharp, comb-like tool called a stripping knife) a mix of both. Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, indicating an infection.
Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Make grooming a pleasant experience for them, complete with encouragement and treats, and you'll be paving the way for simple vet assessments and other handling when they are older.
Chihuahuas need 20 to 30 minutes of physical exercise and can exercise for much longer than you might think. Chihuahuas like running and playing and can normally get enough exercise in a small room, making them ideal for owners without fenced yards. They need to be taken for a regular walk and wander freely in a secure indoor or outdoor setting. For this cheerful breed, simply trotting around following their families is normally enough exercise.
Scheduled xix-monthly health check appointments with your veterinarian are essential to keep your Chihuahua safe and comfortable at all periods of life. Routine dog maintenance allows you to watch your dog's growth and progress, address any issues with your veterinarian and is an important aspect of preventative treatment.
Chihuahuas are typically most prone to injury, such as fractures, concussions, choking on small objects, and being attacked by larger dogs. So, watch out for these possible complications to prevent them from happening.
Chihuahuas are excellent companion dogs. They like attention and are loyal to their owners. They are good family pets but need to have early socialization training. Children find them adorable but teach them how to be careful when approaching Chihuahuas because they are sometimes sensitive and may react differently to them.
Known to be intelligent and independent dogs who enjoy doing things on their own. Some regard Chihuahuas are stubborn because of this, but they just actually need other strategies to make them more engaging. And because they love to please their family, they work best with positive reinforcement and praises.
Reward system also motivates them to show off! So, design their training that satisfies their needs also.
Chihuahuas are friendly towards other dogs and cats. They love to play around with them. But sometimes, their energy overflows, that they become aggressive and noisy around them.
Like with other breeds, early socialization will help manage this. Take extra caution when introducing them to anyone because their emotion might get into them, that they tend to respond differently.
