All about the
Canaan Dog.

The Canaan Dog is a pariah dog that has lived for thousands of years in Israel's desert area. They are thought to be the dog breed that the Hebrews used to herd and patrol their flocks and encampments in biblical times, and some are still used for this purpose by Bedouins and Druse today.

The Canaan Dog is a medium-sized, spitz-like appearance, with a thick, profuse coat and a tail curled over the back when excited or moving. They are lean, bushy-tailed dogs standing 48 to 61 centimeters at the shoulder. They have a muscular, square, and balanced body, which makes them more agile.

They are very alert and silent, allowing them to find prey and escape predators. They are highly defensive and can raise the alarm if they feel threatened. This breed is an intelligent, devoted, and docile dog who is easy to train and eager to please.

Frequently asked questions about the Canaan Dog.

They have a double layer coat, a rough, smooth outer coat, and a lighter undercoat. At least once a year, they will shed; grooming often during this period will help to remove loose fur and keep the dog looking his best.

Weekly grooming helps keep the Canaan's fluffy coat secure and reduces the amount of fur in your household.

The Canaan Dog is a relatively clean dog with no doggie odour and does not require frequent bathing.

Canaans tend to stay clean and normally require less frequent baths than other moderately active breeds. Their nails should be trimmed regularly if they don't wear down naturally, as overly long nails can cause discomfort and structural issues. Brush their teeth whenever needed to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside them.

Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you'll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when he's an adult.

Canaan dogs need regular exercise on a regular basis. Two 30-minute walks a day, or off-leash running or chasing after a ball, are recommended. Canaan dogs are inherently athletic, excelling in agility, tracking, nose training, obedience, and herding, among other competitive dog activities.

Obedience, tracking, herding, endurance, nose training, carting, coursing skill assessments, and other tasks that the dog and handler can enjoy together help to keep their minds and bodies in shape.

Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being; however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog.

Schedule at least twice a year veterinary care or as recommended depending on your dog's state. Your vet will complete a physical examination in these visits, take your dog's temperature, and check his heartbeat, among other things.

Discuss with your vet any concerns you think need immediate attention as it is a key part of preventative care.

Canaan Dogs make excellent companion dogs for families. They are gentle, devoted, and protective of children.

Often educate children how to approach and contact dogs, and supervise all contact between dogs and young children to avoid biting or ear or tail pulling on any party's side. Teach your child to never touch a dog that is feeding or resting or to threaten to steal the dog's food. They are fully committed to and respectful of their children while raised by them.

It is critical that Canaans are socialized with other dogs, infants, and adults.

Canaans are very responsible, sensitive dogs. They are highly intelligent and readily trained. Some Canaans have an unearned reputation for being strong-willed. Just provide them with positive reinforcement and consistent training, and you’ll be surprised at how fun they are to work with. You can find Canaans excelling in performance dog sports and therapy dog work, which testify to their high intelligence and trainability.

Canaans get along with other dogs if they've been raised with them and have been socialized thoroughly, but they have a tendency to play rough and vocalize a lot.

To people who don't know the breed, they may seem aggressive toward other dogs. They can be, but it's important to be able to tell the difference between rough play and true aggression.

Adult Canaan dogs, on the other hand, are not the ideal prospects for off-leash dog parks. They could attempt to intimidate or disrupt the play of other dogs. They may be offensive against other dogs of the same gender.
