All about the
Bluetick Coonhound.

Bluetick Coonhounds are large hunting dogs with paws that are larger than nearly all other breeds of dogs. These sweet and affectionate dogs are known for their sweet demeanour, charisma and friendly nature.

The bluetick is an American original and is known for it's friendly persona and deep bawl mouth. They are known to be a cold-nosed dog which means he's particularly good at finding and following an old or ''cold'' trail. They grow between 58 to 76 centimetres and weigh between 20 to 45 kilograms. Blueticks are quick and lightweight nocturnal hunters named for their glossy coat's mottled (or ''ticked'') black-and-blue pattern.

They're muscular yet racy, smart, devoted and tenacious, and the droopy-eared charm of Blueticks is irresistible. They crave affection and are deeply devoted to those who provide it. Blueticks have a tremendous prey drive. Neglected, underemployed coonhounds with no outlet for their hardwired impulses can develop problem behaviours, like serenading your next-door neighbours with loud, mournful ''music.'' When a Bluetick Coonhound is in pursuit, he is relentless, bold and single-minded about his mission. His off-the-charts prey drive must be channelled appropriately.

Frequently asked questions about the Bluetick Coonhound.

The Bluetick Coonhound has a short, glossy coat that sheds a moderate amount of hair year-round. Brush him at least once a week to remove dead hair and keep the skin and coat healthy.

Brushing will reduce shedding as well as make the coat softer and cleaner.

Brushing their coat with a medium-bristle pad, a rubber grooming mitt, or a hound glove once a week can help remove loose hairs to keep them looking their best. When they get dirty, you may bathe them, but bathing is recommended once to twice every month. The Bluetick's nails should be clipped daily to avoid discomfort.

Make grooming a pleasurable activity for him, complete with encouragement and treats, and you'll have a happy and healthy Bluetick Coonhound.

Blueticks, like hunting dogs, have loads of energy and will require lots of exercises. They love playing in a tightly fenced yard with their owner or going on long walks on a leash.

Endurance and tracking activities, in addition to shooting and field trials, are ideal for this breed.

Veterinary care is necessary for a dog's health and well-being, and the number of vet visits required can vary depending on the dog. It is advised that they get annual or bi-annual health checks to ensure that they remain well and happy throughout their lives.

Your veterinarian will do a physical examination, take your dog's temperature, and check his pulse and general well-being at these annual appointments.

The Bluetick Coonhound is a hound dog with a calm demeanour, but they have a load of energy and a very high prey drive. They can make perfect family pets and are very affectionate. Due to their high energy levels, they should be supervised around younger kids at all times.

When well-conditioned and socialized, Bluetick Coonhounds can be wonderful family companions.

Bluetick Coonhounds are smart and devoted. Training them will require a considerable amount of time and patience. They tend to be independent and will require practice to help them get used to their training habits. Like with other breeds, early and proper training will help them become more responsive to their owners.

Using treats as part of reward training will also work well.

Blueticks are generally good with other domestic pets. It is advised to introduce them at an early age. Smaller animals seem interesting to them because they find joy in chasing and intimidating them. They tend to be dominant, so it is also important to train them to be gentle with others.
