Bloodhounds require 4 to 8 cups of high-quality dry food, divided into two meals daily. It is not advisable to leave the food out at all times as this can lead to overeating. They can also be messy eaters, so tucking their ears before eating can help to minimise any extra mess. Provide them with clean, fresh water at all times.
Bloodhounds have short, dense coats and can be heavy shedders. Their shedding can be managed by proper grooming and by brushing them at least twice a week. You can bathe them at least once in 4 weeks or as needed.
Bloodhound's short and dense coat needs brushing once to twice a week to help keep their coat clean and smooth.
Brushing encourages new hair growth and distributes skin oils in the coat, keeping it healthy. Because they can quickly develop a doggy odour, regular baths will help to keep any unwanted smells at bay. Like with other breeds, their nails should be trimmed regularly.
Keep their grooming experience positive by giving them praise and using positive reinforcement when they display good behaviour.
They are active dogs that require a good amount of exercise. They require an average of 40 to 60 minutes of exercise daily and particularly enjoy long distance walks. If you have a fenced backyard, that's also a great place for play and exercise.
Veterinary care is essential to maintain a dog's health and well-being, and the frequency of vet visits required will depend on the individual dog. Annual or bi-annual health checks are recommended to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout their different life stages.
In these annual visits, your vet will complete a physical examination, take your dog's temperature, check his heartbeat and overall health.
Bloodhounds are affectionate to the children. They love to play and be around with them. Their large size can overpower younger children, so it is advised to keep them supervised at all times when spending time together.
They are great family dogs for older children, and early and consistent socialization always helps to make them better acquainted with others.
While they are known for being loving and devoted, bloodhounds can also be stubborn. They like to take charge and do the things they want. Training can be a challenge and will require your patience and consistency.
Training that reinforces positive messaging and rewards will be more effective. Avoid using a harsh voice and aggressive commands.
Bloodhounds are generally friendly and enjoy other pets' company in the household, especially when socialized at a very young age. Taking them to play at parks and constantly socializing them with other pets will help them develop an even more sociable character.
