What does an Black and Tan Coonhound look like?

General Appearance of the Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound is first and fundamentally a working dog, a trail and tree hound, capable of withstanding the rigors of winter, the heat of summer, and the difficult terrain over which he is called upon to work. Used principally for trailing and treeing raccoons, the Black and Tan Coonhound runs his game entirely by scent.

A short, dense coat protects the Black and Tan Coonhound as he trails through rough brush. It is, of course, black, with rich tan markings above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, and on the chest, legs, and back of the thighs. The toes bear markings that look as if they were made with a black pencil.

Considering their job as a hunting dog, the individual should exhibit moderate bone and good muscle tone. Males are heavier in bone and muscle tone than females.

Frequently asked questions about the Black and Tan Coonhound.

Black and Tans have short-haired, glossy coats that shed moderately all year long. When they ''blow'' their coats in the spring (and often in autumn as well), the shedding is heavier. Owners can brush their B&Ts 2-3 times per week with a bristle brush or grooming glove to reduce the amount of shed hairs; cleanup, vacuuming the floors, and lint rollers on clothes and furniture will be necessary from time to time.

Brushing and cleanup will be needed more often during shedding season.

Take some time in grooming your dog to keep them clean and safe. Grooming encourages the development of fresh hair and distributes skin oils in the coat, keeping it nice and healthy.

Dead hair can be removed with a weekly brushing using a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt or tool, or a hound glove. To avoid getting a doggy odour, Black and Tans should be bathed regularly as required. Ears are an important area to check when you are grooming them, so if you smell an odour or see wax, clean the inner ear with a cleanser as recommended by a veterinarian.

Regular vet visits can help to identify any potential health problems early on.

The average B&T will need about 40-60 minutes of daily exercise, whether it's a play session in the yard or a long walk. It's best if owners divide the exercise into several short sessions throughout the day, such as walks, jogs, or bike rides in the morning and evening, along with one or two short periods of play.

All dogs of this breed must be leashed when in public. These hounds, who were bred to hunt, have a deep instinct to run after any small animal they smell. Backyards must be surrounded by tall, stable fencing, and all walks must be conducted on a leash. Their strong prey drive in combination with their high wandering tendencies means they'll chase after interesting-looking (or -smelling) critters, and they may run off simply because they can. A leash will help you control your B&T in these situations. Even when exercising in your own yard, the area will need to be securely fenced, or else the dog will be tempted to escape.

Larger, deep-chested breeds like the B&T are prone to bloat, an often fatal digestive condition that is most prevalent if the dog eats just before or after exercising. It's best not to feed your B&T for an hour before (or two hours after) any hard exercise.

Their health and well-being can be ensured by scheduling regular visits to their veterinarian. Schedule a visit to the vet at least twice a year, or if needed, based on your individual dog. During these appointments, the veterinarian can do a physical inspection and monitor your dog's health.

Discuss any questions or concerns you have with your veterinarian, as this forms an important aspect of the prevention process.

They are great family dog and especially kind with children. While they may be a bit rambunctious with smaller children, they are generally sociable and are known to be loving and enjoy the company of their family. However, like with any breed, you should always teach young children how to approach and touch dogs.

They are very intelligent but can become easily distracted, especially when they pick up a new and exciting scent.

At times, they can be stubborn, so it provides a good opportunity for the owner to practise patience and find the best way of working with their B&T. These dogs are accustomed to spending hours at a time chasing prey, so without a consistent activity, they'll become frustrated, disobedient, and destructive--and they'll bark loudly and often.

Regular exercise will be great for both the dog's and your own peace of mind.

Black and Tan Coonhounds like being in the company of other dogs since they are pack dogs. They get along well with others without demanding too much of a hierarchy. They are not shy, and while they love to play, rest, and goof off, their personality is pure business when they put their nose to work.
