Frequently asked questions about the Belgian Shepherd Dog Tervuren.

Tervuren's heavy double coats shed year-round, and they are not hypoallergenic, so they are not suited to owners with allergies. Spending 15-20 minutes to groom their coat once a week or as the need arises will help to keep their shedding under control.

Daily brushing your Belgian Tervuren will help maintain their double coat stay clean and neat. Trim their nails regularly if they don't wear them down naturally themselves. Short, neatly trimmed nails will help to keep the dog's feet in good condition.

Dental hygiene is essential for your Tervuren. Providing the dog with raw bones can help to prevent plaque and tartar build-up. Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you'll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and handling when he's an adult.

This high energy level and agile dog requires more activity than walking around the block. They need at least an hour of physical and mental exercise. They enjoy active exercises such as running and hiking.

Tervuren is well suited to just about any dog sport or activity you can teach, including agility, flyball, herding, obedience, rally, search and rescue, and tracking.

Schedule your health check visits with your vet every six months to ensure that your Tervuren is healthy and in a good state throughout it's life stages. In these annual visits, your vet will complete a physical examination, take your dog?s temperature and check their heartbeat, among other things.

Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog?s growth and development. Discuss with your vet any concerns you think needs immediate attention as it is a key part of preventative care.

Belgian Tervuren are devoted to their families, including children, but they're more interested in hanging with the adults. If they are raised around with children, they can be well integrated. They are best suited to a home with older children who understand how to handle them with respect.

They have a strong prey drive and will often chase cats or other small furry animals outdoors. Still, some Tervurens get along well with indoor cats if they have been raised together.

Tervurens are intelligent and easily trained dogs; however, they are free thinkers. To succeed in training them, you'll need to win their loyalty and respect without using threats or physical aggression, leading to resentment.

Despite their courage and power, the Tervuren is sensitive, and abrupt corrections will permanently affect his disposition. They do best with a combination of firm, fair, consistent rules, positive reinforcement, and rewards for correct behaviour.

Use positive training techniques, rewarding them with praise, play, or treats when they perform commands correctly.

They get along well with other dogs and cats if they've been raised with them, but unfamiliar animals who come into their property can cause problems. They like chasing due to their herding instincts, and cats who stand their ground will more likely be ignored compared to those who turn tail and run.

That desire to chase can fall onto passing joggers and cars, so a fenced yard is necessary not only for the safety of others but also for the Terv's own well-being.
