Frequently asked questions about the Azawakh.

Azawakh sheds minimally only. But they need to be brushed weekly. Regular trimming and professional grooming are also required. This makes them suitable for dog owners who have sensitivity to fur.

However, they do sometimes shed, especially with the change of seasons. But their shedding will depend on what type of hair genes they have inherited.

It doesn't take so much effort to groom them. Their coat may be either trimmed with clippers or by stripping (a process by which the coat is thinned and shortened with a sharp, comb-like tool called a stripping knife) a mix of both.

Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, indicating an infection. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

Make grooming a pleasant experience for them, complete with encouragement and treats, and you'll be paving the way for simple vet assessments and other handling when they are older.

Azawakh is a high-energy breed that requires plenty of daily activity. They require at least a half-hour of vigorous exercise or play every day. They need brief, diverse training sessions to help them learn new commands. Lots of exercise and outdoor activities will keep them happy and healthy.

Veterinary care is essential to maintain a dog's health and well-being, and the frequency of vet visits required will depend on the individual dog. Annual health checks are recommended to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout their different life stages.

In these annual visits, your vet will complete a physical examination, take your dog's temperature, check his heartbeat and overall health.

Azawakhs can make terrific companion dogs if someone in the household gives the necessary exercise. They are devoted and protective of their family.

They might have challenges in dealing with children, but with proper socialization at an early age, they will learn how to deal with them.

Positive reinforcement is the most effective method of teaching your Azawakh. When they complete a task, reward them with sweets and toys.

Verbal compliments and a soft pat will encourage your Azawakh, and they will be more eager to serve you. You may train your Azawakh in an open environment, a gated yard, or a large room.

Azawakhs can get along with other dogs, but if you have cats or tiny dogs, they will not be safe around Azawakh unless they have been raised with them since puppyhood.

So, proper socialization training is needed to help them learn how to behave well around new friends.
