What does an American Hairless Terrier look like?

General Appearance of the American Hairless Terrier

The American Hairless Terrier is a small to medium sized, smoothly muscled and active terrier. Medium bone, not so heavy as to appear coarse or so light as to appear racy and blends with the proportion of the dog. The overall appearance is strong but moderate with firm, smooth, flat muscles.

Ancestors of the breed were bred to hunt rats and other vermin. The lack of coat on the hairless variety of the American Hairless Terrier renders them unsuited for most hunting activities.

They have, however, retained a strong hunting instinct and excel in many other activities and sports. The breed is energetic, alert, curious and intelligent.

The hairless variety might have eyebrows and whiskers, while the coated has a short, shiny coat. The skin of the hairless is smooth and warm to the touch

Frequently asked questions about the American Hairless Terrier.

American Hairless Terrier shed a low to moderate amount, and they may do a heavy shed once a year.

Occasional baths and weekly brushings with a horsehair mitt or de-shedding glove to pull away dead hairs will help to keep him in beautiful condition.

Keeping them clean and neat does not take so much effort. Begin accustoming them to being brushed and examined when they are still puppy. Handle their paws frequently; dogs are touchy about their feet and look inside their mouth.

Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odor, which can indicate an infection.

Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

The American Hairless Terrier requires just moderate physical activity. They need to go outside many times a day, but a quick daily stroll in a fenced-in yard or frequent walks is good. Make sure they receive at least one solid half-hour walk each day, as well as several little active play sessions throughout the day.

They like physical exercise but are as content to snuggle up on the couch close to their owner.

Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being, however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog. Scheduled six-monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout all life stages.

Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog's growth and development, discuss any concerns with your vet, and form a key part of preventative care.

American Hairless Terriers are active, clever, and highly affectionate, and they make wonderful companions. They are overly enthusiastic towards children, so proper training and socialization are needed to teach them how to behave well around them. They are also ideal companions for animal enthusiasts who suffer from allergies.

They are very clever and eager to please. They are extremely trainable and respond very well to positive reinforcement-based training approaches. Train certain fundamentals, such as housebreaking and etiquette, after 2-3 months. At the age of 4-5 months, advanced training should begin.

American Hairless Terriers get along well with other dogs and other domestic pets. This breed is not known to prefer to live with at least one other dog. Still, proper socialization should be given to them at an early age.
