Loved by pet owners Australia wide.

If I was able to give ten stars here I would. They have helped us since we started, as we knew nothing about pet insurance. Since the real children moved out we now have "Fur Children" as they say. We are proudly with an Australian business who cares, the even went as far as following up for us and always ask how our pets are going? Isn't that different? Highly recommended.

Rachel C - March 2022

I have found Petsy really reliable, they communicate well and they want what’s best for you and your pet.

Kaitlin Mason - December 2021

Amazing service and caring people. Couldn't speak more highly of the company and people. Just love our fur babies and they made it so easy for us to have peace of mind that our babies our cared for and protected if anything should ever happen. Seriously can not speak more highly of them. Definitely recommend to everyone 🙂

Supporting veterinary professionals

Veterinary professionals dedicate their time and expertise to care for our beloved pets throughout their lives. At Petsy, we hold immense gratitude for the invaluable care and tireless, compassionate work that goes into providing medical care for our pets.

At Petsy Pet Insurance, we are dedicated to supporting veterinary professionals in promoting overall animal health and well-being. We understand the real-world challenges faced by those who care for animals and the importance of client education in ensuring responsible pet ownership and the quality care for animals.

Petsy specialises in offering quality pet insurance to Australian pet owners and we are passionate about being transparent and educating pet owners about pet insurance. We know first-hand that pet insurance can offer a lifeline in providing a pet with the care and treatment they need in the unfortunate event they find themselves in when an unexpected accident happens or get unwell. Having a Petsy Pet Insurance in place can greatly impact future treatment decisions and help to keep your pets happier and healthier for longer.

We understand that navigating pet insurance can be difficult for veterinarians. On this page, we’ll provide some clear and practical information on understanding pet insurance, how it works and guidelines on providing unbiased information about pet insurance to pet owners.

Petsy’s “Just-in-Case Kitty” is an initiative designed to make a difference in our communities and vet practices to help animals in need that are unable to receive veterinary care, such as strays brought in off the street, abandoned animals or wildlife animals.

Pet insurance helps pet owners with difficult financial decisions, allowing their pets to receive the best veterinary treatments without finances being the deciding factor.

How pet insurance works

With a pet insurance policy, you’ll pay monthly premiums to an insurer and in the instance your pet gets unexpectedly sick or injured, you can submit a claim to the insurance provider for partial reimbursement of the vet costs.

Your policy will outline what conditions and expenses are covered, any exclusions, the reimbursement rate, any available excesses and the maximum payouts or limits for a year.

When you start a new pet insurance policy, any exclusion periods (or waiting periods) have to be served symptom-free before your coverage begins.

Pet insurance is for unexpected veterinary expenses. Any kind of illness or health issue that your pet has shown signs or symptoms of before the exclusion periods end are considered as pre-existing conditions and these are excluded from cover. This is why it’s so important to have a pet insurance in place before you actually need it.

Petsy Pet Insurance works a little differently to many other pet insurance policies.

  • No sub-limits on any of your inclusions
  • We offer cover for vaccine preventable diseases if your pet is up to date with their vaccinations
  • We have some of the shortest exclusion periods for illness related conditions (14 days instead of 30 days)
  • No decrease in coverage over time
  • No offshore call centres, only Australian based pet insurance specialists to support you and your pet
  • We provide covers for puppies and kittens from 6 weeks old (instead of 8 weeks like many others) which means new pet owners could have passed exclusion periods for accidental injuries (1 day) and illness (14 days) by the time your new pet comes home
  • You can choose to cover up to 90% of eligible vet bills, claim up to $25,000 per year, plus no sub limits even for expensive treatments. That’s one of the highest limits of all levels of pet insurance available
  • Optional coverage for dental illness
  • No cancellation fees
  • All we do is pet insurance, so you can rest easy knowing your pet insurance experience will be a walk in the park

Can I purchase a policy and treat my own pet?

Registered veterinarians are able to purchase a pet insurance policy from Petsy and treat their own pets under a Petsy Pet Insurance policy. There is no difference in terms of the coverage offered, however, there are some variances in relation to waiver requests and any requests for exclusion reviews (if applicable).

Under Petsy Pet Insurance, policy holders can choose to have a Waiver Form completed to apply to reduce the exclusion or waiting period for Specified Conditions. If you want to have this form submitted, this needs to be completed by a registered veterinarian other than yourself. Any exclusion reviews and associated vet clinical visits also need to be completed by a veterinarian other than yourself.

For submitted claims, we require the relevant clinical history and a tax invoice showing a paid balance as well as any discounts that are applied to a staff member. Please note that claim payments are calculated based on the total amount you have paid, so if you received a staff discount from your clinic, the calculated reimbursement is based on the discounted amount. We may require additional proof of payment (e.g. a receipt of payment) for claims submitted by a staff member of a vet clinic.

With all claims, our Australian based team of vet and vet nurse assessors assess the information provided, including diagnoses, results of diagnostic tests and clinical signs noted in the medical history.

Good to know

The Product Disclosure Statement (‘PDS’) is the document that contains key information about what is and isn’t covered. The PDS, when read in conjunction with your Certificate of Insurance, provides all the benefits, coverage, terms and conditions, limits and exclusions of your Petsy Pet Insurance policy.

Pet insurance is designed for unexpected events, so there is no cover for pre-existing conditions. This includes signs or symptoms of health conditions noted in your pet’s medical history before the exclusion periods end on your policy.

Be mindful of the exclusion periods (or waiting periods) that apply to your policy. These need to pass symptom-free before your coverage begins.

Elective and preventative treatments (such as vaccinations and desexing) are not covered under a Petsy Pet Insurance policy.

General exclusions apply on all pet insurance policies. The Summary of Exclusions can be found on pages 11-12 of the PDS. This part of PDS contains information about the exclusions applicable to Petsy Pet Insurance policy and when a claim would not be approved.

Guidelines in providing un-biased information about pet insurance to pet owners

Research and education

Veterinarians can gain a better understanding of the pet insurance industry landscape by learning about different pet insurance providers, policies, coverage options and limitations.

If you have questions about pet insurance or would like assistance with clarifying terminology or would just like to know more about pet insurance, please reach out and find out what we can do to support you and your clinic.

Provide resources
Veterinarians can offer educational materials, or refer to educational websites where pet owners can independently research and compare different pet insurance options. This could empower pet owners to make their own decisions based on accurate information.

Encourage pet owners to read policies carefully
Veterinarians can help pet owners by stressing the importance of reading policy documents thoroughly. Different policies can vary significantly in coverage, so it’s crucial for pet owners to understand the terms and conditions of their coverage.

Provide transparency to pet owners
Although a pet owner’s pet may be generally healthy, being transparent and providing information to pet owners about what’s listed in their pet’s medical notes can help manage expectations and minimise any misunderstandings about pre-existing conditions.

Extensive coverage for your clients

Our mission is to increase the number of Australian pets protected by pet insurance, making it easier for them to receive the best veterinary treatment and care if the unexpected happens.

The advancements in technology, medicine and diagnostics and specialist treatments mean that our beloved pets can receive better care than ever before. Having a pet insurance policy in place means that pets can receive the best veterinary treatment and care, without money being the deciding factor.

What’s covered?

Petsy Pet Insurance covers an extensive range of accidents, illnesses and health conditions (thousands in fact). The policy will cover you for unexpected accidental injury or illness that happens to your pet, unless it’s specifically excluded from your policy.

Here’s what we don’t cover:

⨯ Pre-existing conditions
⨯ General exclusions
⨯ Elective and preventative treatments
⨯ Exclusion periods

If it’s not an exclusion under the policy, then it’s covered. All submitted claims go through a claims assessment process which includes having an Australian-based team of vet assessors examine the information provided by your vet(s). This includes reviewing diagnoses, results of diagnostic tests and clinical signs noted in your pet’s medical history along with any invoices and treatment costs submitted. These are assessed against your policy.

Claims Process

The fastest way to submit a claim for your client is to email a copy of the invoice and clinical history through to [email protected]

This will go directly to our Australian-based assessors for assessment.

Alternatively, policy holders can also log into their Pet Portal to submit their claim by answering a few simple questions, uploading their invoice and clicking “submit”.

The Just-In-Case Kittty

A Win-Win for Veterinary Practices and Animals in Need

At Petsy, we understand that veterinary professionals prioritise the well-being of animals above all else.

That’s why we’ve created the cobranded “Just in Case Kitty” designed to benefit both your practice and the animals you care for that may not have the financial resources to help pay for care.

The concept is simple – When a customer signs up with Petsy through your website or promotional material, we’ll deposit the usual referral bonus into a special “Just in Case Kitty” trust account, rather than paying it directly to your clinic or business. This account will earn interest, growing over time as more customers join through your referral.

The “Just In Case Kitty” empowers your clinic to make a difference in your community.

At your discretion, you can use these funds to provide care for animals in need – such as strays brought in off the street or wildlife.

Veterinarians

Are veterinarians able to recommend specific pet insurance companies to clients?

Vets and veterinary practices in Australia aren’t able to sell or recommend a specific pet insurance policy or provider without a licence. Even recommending a pet insurance generally or providing information about pet insurance are generally allowed for financial professionals only, given that pet insurance is a financial product regulated in Australia.

Instead, vets and veterinary practices could encourage pet owners to take the time to understand their policy and choose a policy that suits their financial needs and circumstances, and if they have any queries, seek advice from a professional financial adviser.

What is a veterinary clinic's responsibility regarding pet insurance?

Vet clinics aren’t responsible for pet insurance, as it’s a separate contract between the pet owner and the pet insurance company. However, vet clinics do play a role in the claims process by providing necessary documentation to the insurance provider, such as itemised invoices, clinical notes, medical records, diagnosis notes and clinical history. In some instances, veterinary clinics may need to communicate directly with insurance companies to clarify any medical procedures, treatments or costs associated with the pet’s care. This helps to ensure that the insurance company has all the information to process claims accurately

What is the best way for for clients to understand pet insurance?

Having the client contact a professional financial advisor could be the best way of ensuring that they receive correct and accurate information about the policy including all the benefits, coverage, terms and conditions, limits and exclusions.

Where can clients go to get more information on pet insurance?

Clients can go to a range of places to find information about pet insurance including a professional financial advisor, comparison websites, the websites of various providers and calling pet insurance companies for additional information on policy coverage.

How does a pet being insured affect the way I run my vet practice?

Having a pet insured generally does not directly affect the way a veterinarian run their practices. Veterinarians are trained professionals who prioritise the health and well-being of animals, regardless of whether they have insurance coverage or not. The primary concern of a veterinarian is to provide the best possible care for the pet, based on their medical expertise and the specific needs of the animal.

With that being said, there are a few indirect ways in which pet insurance can have some influence on veterinary practices, particularly with financial considerations and communication about costs.

With pet insurance, pet owners can consider necessary veterinary treatments and procedures without finances being the deciding factor. This can lead to pet owners considering a larger range of recommended treatments, which can positively impact the veterinarian's ability to provide the best available care.

Is there training available for staff on how the Petsy system works?

Yes, if you’d like to request information for your colleagues, staff or clinic, please reach out to us at [email protected]

Where can I find information to provide to clients for more information about Petsy?

You can request a vet kit for your clinic, provide a link to our website petsy.com.au or pass on our number
1300 952 790 if a client would like to find out more about Petsy Pet Insurance.

Are there discounts available for veterinary professionals?

Yes, we’re happy to offer a special discount for practising veterinary professionals. Please feel free to reach out to us directly, and we'll be glad to assist you.

Will there be communication regarding a claim directly with the clinic, or will it always go through the client?

The claims communication will usually go to the client, once a claim has been lodged. In the instance that the client has a particularly unusual or complex claim, our claims assessors may request additional information from the treating veterinarian.

What is required from the veterinary clinic to assist in determining a pre-existing condition?

At Petsy, we offer a pre-existing condition assessment to all members when they start their policy in order to provide transparency upfront on conditions not covered under the policy. All we’ll need to complete this assessment is a copy of the pet’s medical history. We’ll reach out to the veterinary clinic based on the list of vets supplied by the client.

Can the clinic provide information directly to the insurance provider regarding a claim, or must it go through the client?

For pet insurance claims, the clinic can supply and provide information directly to the insurance provider.

How do owners know or find out what is covered under their policy?

If a client would like to know what’s covered under their policy, it’s best for them to contact their pet insurance provider who will be able to discuss the specifics of their policy.

Our clinic uses alternative therapies (acupuncture, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy) - are these treatments covered?
