Why Pet Insurance Matters for Puppies in Training

Puppies are full of energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm, especially during training! While this is all part of their learning journey, it can mean that they’re also more likely to have mishaps along the way.

Whether it’s a tumble while practicing recall, an upset stomach from eating something they shouldn’t, or an unexpected allergic reaction, pet insurance can help make sure that puppy parents can say “yes” to vet care when it’s needed.

With Petsy, owners can get up to 90% back on eligible vet bills, so cost doesn’t stand in the way of a puppy’s health and well-being.

Common Puppy Training Injuries & How Insurance Can Help

Even in a safe and structured training environment, puppies can be unpredictable. They might overdo it on zoomies and sprain a paw, swallow something they shouldn’t, or develop tummy troubles from stress or new treats.

Some puppies may also experience allergic reactions to grass, food, or even flea bites. While most incidents are minor, vet bills can add up quickly, especially if x-rays, blood tests, or surgery are needed.

Pet insurance gives puppy parents the confidence to seek treatment early, so minor issues don’t turn into major problems. With coverage for vet costs ranging from diagnostics to emergency care, Petsy helps ensure that pups can keep learning and growing without financial worry.

How Puppy Schools & Pet Insurance Go Hand-in-Hand

Puppy school is all about setting pups up for success, and pet insurance can play a key role in that journey. Many pet parents aren’t prepared for the unexpected costs of veterinary care, and without insurance, they may be forced to delay or decline treatment. This can impact a puppy’s health and even slow their training progress.

Starting a pet insurance plan early can help pet parents feel more prepared and confident in their ability to care for their pup—no matter what happens. Petsy Pet Insurance makes it easy, with flexible cover, no sub-limits on conditions, and policies available from just 6 weeks old.

Partner Benefits for Puppy School Owners

At Petsy, we know that puppy school owners go above and beyond to give pups the best possible start. You’ll have the peace of mind that your own pup is protected.

How does Pet Insurance for Puppies Work?

Young puppies are naturally playful and adventurous, which can sometimes result in unexpected trips to the vet. That’s where Petsy Pet Insurance comes in.

A Petsy Pet Insurance policy covers a portion (80% or 90%) of the eligible vet treatment costs if your puppy gets unexpectedly sick or injured.

While insurance won’t stop injuries or illnesses from happening, it helps make treatment more affordable, so you don’t have to worry about cost being the deciding factor in your pet’s care.

A Petsy Pet Insurance covers a wide range of conditions/illnesses, from ear infections to diabetes, cancer treatments, x-rays, and even surgery if your puppy swallows something they shouldn’t or has tummy troubles. It can also help if your pup breaks a bone, gets hit by a car, or needs emergency care for an accident.

Pet insurance is designed for the unexpected events, and exclusion periods begin on your policy’s start date (or when you increase your cover). That’s why getting insurance could be a key, so your pup is covered long before they need it.

Exclusion Periods

An exclusion period is the time when your pet isn’t covered after you purchase a new policy or increase your coverage. It begins on your pet’s First Date of Cover and varies depending on condition as outlined below.

Here are the exclusion periods:

For Optional Dental Illness:

A specified condition includes specific health issues, such as cruciate ligament damage, intervertebral disc disease, hip dysplasia, patella luxation, elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), cherry eye, entropion, ectropion, and lumps.

Pre-Existing Symptoms and Conditions – Any illness, injury, or condition that shows signs or symptoms before your policy starts or during an exclusion period won’t be covered. This means if your pet develops symptoms of a condition while waiting for cover to kick in, it will be considered pre-existing and excluded from future claims.

Your Certificate of Insurance will list the specific exclusion periods for your pet.

Common Injuries and Illnesses for Puppies

Puppies, with their boundless energy and curiosity, often encounter various accidental injuries and illnesses. Understanding these common issues is essential for effective prevention and care.

Accidental Injuries

One common injury among puppies is musculoskeletal damage, including fractures, sprains, and strains. These injuries often result from falls, overexertion, or awkward movements during play. Signs to watch for include limping, reluctance to move, or unusual positioning of limbs

Additionally, puppies’ explorative nature can lead to lacerations and skin wounds from sharp objects or interactions with other animals. Insect bites and stings are also common, with encounters involving bees, spiders, or other insects potentially causing swelling, pain, and allergic reactions.

Moreover, puppies may ingest foreign objects, leading to vomiting, diarrhoea, gastrointestinal blockages or internal injuries. Common issues in Australia include spider bites, snake bites and tick paralysis, particularly on the humid coastal areas of the east coast.

Common Illnesses

Puppies are susceptible to several serious illnesses, many of which are preventable through vaccination.

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious and often fatal disease affecting unvaccinated puppies, leading to symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Canine distemper and infectious hepatitis are also serious viral infections preventable through vaccination.

Parasite infestations pose another concern; puppies are vulnerable to internal parasites like hookworms and roundworms, as well as external parasites such as fleas and ticks, which can lead to skin irritation, anaemia, and other health complications.

Certain breeds may have predispositions to inherited conditions; for example, Australian Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia and eye conditions like cataracts.

Benefits of pet insurance for puppies

Puppies are full of energy, curiosity, and mischief, which is part of what makes them so lovable. But that also means they can get into trouble, from eating something they shouldn’t to taking a tumble during playtime.

Vet bills can add up quickly, especially if your pup needs emergency care, treatment for an illness, or ongoing support for a hereditary condition. While insurance won’t stop injuries or illnesses from happening, it helps make treatment more affordable, so you don’t have to worry about cost being the deciding factor in your pet’s care.
