The Polish Lowland Sheepdog must consume 1.5 to 2.5 cups of dry food a day. The Polish Lowland Sheepdog should be fed high-quality dog food, either commercially produced or cooked at home, under the guidance and approval of your veterinarian. Some dogs are vulnerable to obesity, so keep an eye on their calorie intake and weight.
Polish Lowland Sheepdogs will ''blow their coats'' seasonally, usually twice a year, even though they shed very little. The amount of shedding is around normal.
However, if you keep the coat long, the shed hairs get tangled in the long fur and remain there until you brush them away. Whereas if you clip the coat short, you'll have little or no grooming duties. but shed hair will have more freedom to fall out onto your floor and furnishings. As a result, it's a trade-off.
The shaggy, heavy double coat of the PON necessitates a lot of upkeep. The undercoat is smooth and thick, with a crisp outer coat with a water-resistant finish. A PON that is kept in a full coat needs to be appropriately cleaned at least once a week. A PON with a puppy or ''summer'' cut also needs grooming regularly to keep the coat clean of mats and debris such as leaves, weeds, and flower blooms.
Ears should be tested weekly and washed if necessary, as well as nails clipped.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a high-energy breed that needs at least two hours of daily exercise. Part of this time should ideally be spent off the leash, doing exercises or training that keep dogs emotionally motivated and help them concentrate their energies.
If an owner can have adequate exercise, the breed can adapt well to a city climate, but it is best adapted to a rural environment and a house with a wide garden where it can be comfortably entertained.
Poland Lowland Sheepdogs are generally healthy, and conscientious breeders routinely screen their stock for health issues like Hip Dysplasia and consult with other devoted breeders to ensure their health and unique characteristics are preserved. Daily pet appointments for checkups and disease prevention ensure that the dog has a long and stable life.
In the company of young children, the PON may be a good guy, but he can still be too rowdy. He's a perfect fit for families of older kids who he won't throw over.
The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, initially bred for herding and defending, is now an excellent working dog breed. They've grown in popularity as companion dog in recent years. They have a strong bond with their human family and can even adjust to living in an apartment.
PONs make excellent house dogs because they are friendly to other animals, sweet and tireless playmates for children, intelligent watchdogs, and fast learners. Early socialization and dog training courses are strongly recommended because the breed can be overbearing, arrogant, and wary of outsiders. For owners who can accommodate a confident, territorial herding puppy, PONs are affectionate, bouncy, and trainable dogs.
Lowland Poland Other species are usually accepted by sheepdogs. They can, however, attempt to corral and manage them due to their powerful herding instincts.
Here are some of the breeders who we work with as part of our breeder awareness program.
