Large, mastiff-type molossoid dog. There are two varieties of coat: long and short.

They are rustic, substantial, with brisk gait and an impressive attitude.

The breed has a lively, calm and expressive look; it is well proportioned and has a harmonious appearance.

The Estrela?s oval-shaped eyes are medium in size, and usually a dark brown colour, with a serene and intelligent expression.

Both short and long-coated varieties are seen, with the shorter coat being more common in working strains that have not been modified for the show ring. All about the
Estrela Mountain Dog.

The Estrela Mountain Dog's exact origins are uncertain, but they are one of the oldest dogs in the Estrela Mountains. They were first used as herd-guarding dogs in the Serra da Estrela mountains, now known as Portugal. Estrela Mountain Dog as we know it today was raised in the 1900s. Farmers preferred them because of their ability to detect and drive away wolves and other major predators.

Since the Estrela Mountain Dog is an old breed in Portugal, there are several height guidelines. As a purebred guardian-herding dog, the Estrela Mountain Dog is expected to be very tall. The majority weigh between 34 and 58.9 kilograms and stand between 60.9 and 76.2 centimeters at the shoulder. However, others may be smaller or larger than average.

The Estrela Mountain Dog, as a protector breed, has a sensitive maternal nature as well as being strong-willed and independent ? a mix of characteristics that can be difficult to manage without a confident, knowledgeable handler and lots of socialization. It is faithful and caring to its owners, but it is still on the lookout for signs of threats. It is usually quiet, calm, and friendly when it comes to infants, but its scale and power can be too much for the very young.

Frequently asked questions about the Estrela Mountain Dog.

Estrela Mountain Dogs have a moderate amount of shedding. It's a part of the hair's regular growth cycle. Brushing your hair regularly decreases the amount of hair that sheds. Their fitness and breed type primarily determine it.

However, they shed twice a year vigorously and need many everyday brushings. During the seasons, there is even more shedding. A shaving rake may be used to remove knots and mats before using the slicker pad.

The Estrela has a thick outer coat with a texture similar to goat fur and is available in both longhair and shorthair varieties. Aside from routine grooming, a bath now and then will keep them clean and looking their best.

Grooming can be an excellent way to communicate with your pet. Their stiff, fast-growing nails should be cut daily with a nail clipper or grinder to avoid overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. To prevent wax and debris buildup, which can contribute to infection, their ears should be washed regularly.

The Estrela is a calm breed, but he can be very playful with children he knows, particularly as a puppy.

If your dog isn't a working dog, playtime in the backyard, ideally fenced or occasional walks, maybe choices for exercise. Indoor games such as catching a ball rolling around the floor or showing him new tricks can be good opportunities to burn calories when the weather is terrible.

As demonstrated by his background, this breed needs space and freedom to travel and is not suited to apartment living. He can become aggressive in the home if he is not given enough stimulation.

There could be health problems, as in any breed. While some dogs may experience these problems at some point in their lives, most of the Estrela Mountain Dogs are stable. Those interested in owning an Estrela Mountain Dog will learn about potential health conditions in the breed by working with a reputable breeder. Good breeders conduct genetic tests on their breeding stock to minimize the chances of illness in their puppies.

Since the Estrela Mountain Dog is a big purebred, they can comfortably tolerate excessively enthusiastic children's play. They're generally sweet and protective, but they could accidentally knock a child over during play.

Even then, for children who understand how to handle and play with dogs professionally from a young age, the Estrela Mountain Dog can be a wonderful, faithful friend.

Tricks, socialization, housetraining, agility, obedience, behavioral therapy, and more with the Estrela Mountain Dog. This is an intelligent breed that will react well to instruction from a competent and assertive handler. Still, if it detects confusion or vulnerability, its independence and strong character will manifest as stubbornness.

The Estrela Mountain Dog is relatively easy to train for experienced trainers, but they must demonstrate their superiority over the dog from a young age. Socialization preparation is critical to ensuring that the breed's inherent suspicion of others does not turn into aggression in adulthood.

When it comes to other species, the Estrela Mountain Dog will get along with them if they are introduced slowly and politely, and early socialization can make things easier. It's safer that they get used to other dogs as soon as possible. Estrela Mountain Dogs aren't naturally fond of different species and prefer to live alone. Even so, many Estrela Mountain Dogs get along well with other dogs and cats, so it all comes down to preparation, socialization, and chance.
