What does an Chesapeake Bay Retriever look like?

General Appearance of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The Chesapeake is a strong, well-balanced, powerfully built animal of moderate size and medium length in body and leg, deep and wide in chest, the shoulders built with full liberty of movement, and with no tendency to weakness in any feature, particularly the rear. The power though, should not be at the expense of agility or stamina. Size and substance should not be excessive as this is a working retriever of an active nature.

Distinctive features include eyes that are very clear, of yellowish or amber hue, and a double coat that consists of a short, harsh, wavy outer coat and a dense, fine, woolly undercoat containing an abundance of natural oil. Their coat is ideally suited for the icy rugged conditions of weather the Chesapeake often works in.

They are very protective and loyal to their family and determined to protect them from strangers.

And while they are mostly known for being tough, they actually have a soft spot; they are affectionate and sociable, especially when properly trained to socialize at an early age. They may seem stubborn at first, but they are actually a good student.

Frequently asked questions about the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

It doesn't take much work to keep an adorable coat clean like with Chessies. They shed a low to moderate amount only. Occasional baths and weekly brushings with a horsehair mitt or de-shedding glove to pull away dead hairs will help to keep him in beautiful condition.

Cheesies have a low-maintenance coat, but brushing with a rubber brush on a regular basis is recommended to maintain the coat in good shape and control oil. However, they are not recommended to be overwashed since their waterproof coat could be damaged. Constant bathing might damage the coat's texture, so bathe whenever it is totally needed and always practice caution.

Check their lips, ears, nose, throat, eyes, and feet for sores, rashes, or symptoms of illness such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation. Ears should have a pleasant odour and be free of wax or gunk, and eyes should be clean and free of redness or discharge.

Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you'll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when they are adult.

Among the retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay has the strongest personality and is the most powerful. Considering their roots, they will surely love water-related sports such as swimming, but hiking also sounds great for them! They require a good amount of exercise. A simple stroll around the block is insufficient to keep his muscle tone and satisfy his working instincts.

Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being, however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog. Scheduled six-monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout all life stages.

Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog's growth and development, discuss any concerns with your vet, and form a key part of preventative care.

Chesapeakes are intensely loyal and affectionate to their family. They can make an excellent companion and is very friendly with children. Their energy might need to be toned down so they can't unintentionally hurt children. So, proper training and socialization are needed.

They are protective of their family and are considered moderately good watchdogs.

Chesapeakes are high energy dogs that have a very short span of attention. And though they are easy to train, they are sometimes regarded as stubborn because they got bored easily. They were advised to take obedience training consistently. Design their routines in bite-sized, so they don't get bored easily.

Chesapeakes are generally sociable to everyone but tend to get warry with other pets they just met. Bringing them to the park helps, but they need a little caution because they have a tendency to be aggressive when playing with other pets. But they are known to be affectionate and smart, so you won't have a hard time teaching them how to deal well with others!

To keep them more acquainted with having new faces around, they are recommended to socialize with them at a very young age.
