German Spitz needs to have at least 2 to 4 cups of high-quality kibble a day. They have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed, so you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out during the day. Limit the number of treats, as well. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.
The German Spitz has a thick double coat that sheds twice a year. During these days, the whole undercoat is shed in about 2 to 3 weeks.
To clean their old coat, they will need to be brushed daily, and their hair will eventually get all over the clothing, furniture, and floor.
Occasional bath will help maintain their coat.
Keeping them clean and neat needs a regular routine. Begin accustoming them to being brushed and examined when they are still a puppy. German Spitz has a double coat that needs to be brushed at least once a week. Handle their paws frequently ? dogs are touchy about their feet ? and look inside their mouth.
Trim their nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. Their ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odour, which can indicate an infection. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.
German Spitz needs a moderate amount of regular exercise. On a daily basis, 1 to 2 hours of physical activity will make them happy already. They also enjoy a run or a walk and will quite happily occupy themselves in the garden all day with their owners.
Veterinary care is essential to a dog's health and well-being; however, the frequency of treatment and checkups will depend on the dog. Scheduled six-monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure they are healthy and happy throughout all life stages.
Routine maintenance for your dog gives you a chance to track your dog's growth and development, discuss any concerns with your vet, and form a key part of preventative care.
German Spitz's are a friendly and active little breed that enjoy playing with their family. They can be a great playmate for children if provided with early and proper socialization at an early age. They are sometimes wary of strangers, making them perfect watchdog.
German Spitz's are intelligent dogs who do well with training. However, the trainer will need to design their training routine so that they will not get bored easily.
They are sometimes sensitive, so do not use harsh words; rather, give them plenty of verbal recognition to keep them motivated.
German Spitz can get along well with other animals if they are introduced slowly and calmly. They have a high prey drive, so smaller animals might be challenging for them to deal. However, proper and early socialization will help teach them to be easy on other pets.
